Danny backs Climate and Nature Bill
Winchester MP, Danny Chambers, has backed a new landmark bill that would put the UK back on course to meet its international climate and nature targets.
The UK needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with limiting global heating to 1.5°C—and second, to reverse nature loss by 2030. The Government has already made international commitments and passing the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill would update the UK’s climate and environmental legislation to reflect those commitments.
The legislation is to be introduced by Lib Dem MP Roz Savage who holds four World Records for ocean rowing, including first woman to row solo across three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian.
The Bill has already attracted the support of major figures such as Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden, and former net zero tsar Chris Skidmore who said the government should enact this “Climate Change Act 2”.
Liberal Democrat MP for Winchester, Danny Chambers said:
“I have heard from countless people here in Winchester and across the Meon Valley about just how concerned they are about the future of our planet.
“Whether that’s pollution in our rivers and air, the increased risk of floods affecting our farmers and transport systems, or the huge challenge of global climate change that’ll have crippling impacts across the whole economy if we don’t act now.
“That is why I wholeheartedly back Roz’s bill which represents our best chance of protecting our natural environment and building the industries of the future.
“After years of the previous Conservative government’s failure to live up to our international obligations and repeatedly voting against measures to tackle climate change, this bill can put the UK back on track to meet our commitments and give the next generations the security that they deserve.
“It is an opportunity that we cannot pass up and I hope that the government works with us to get this landmark legislation passed.”
