Winchester gets Greener, Faster Recycling
Look out for Winchester City Council’s new electric powered waste truck which has taken to the streets as part of the City’s drive to go greener, faster.
Your Lib Dem-run Council has already removed all diesel trucks from service, with the hydro-treated vegetable oil trucks reducing emissions by 94%. This follows the new bin calendars which significantly reduced the miles travelled, and the introduction of food waste collection next autumn.
Winchester could go further: collecting pots, tubs and trays – but Hampshire County Council are failing to move ahead with securing a facility that could process them.
Under Hampshire’s watch, more of our household waste is ending up in landfill than it was previously – despite the reduction in the amount of waste being disposed of in landfill nationally.
Recently, pressure by local residents and a protest organised by the Liberal Democrats forced the County Council to u-turn on plans to close household waste recycling plants across our county. This would’ve led to more fly-tipping, longer car journeys and increased queues at existing sites – such as the tip in Bar End.
Winchester City Council Leader, Martin Tod says, “Instead of making progress, the Conservatives are going backwards. Liberal Democrats are showing that it doesn’t have to be this way.“
