Winchester Lib Dems fight rising bills
Danny Chambers and your local Liberal Democrat councillors are demanding more support for struggling households as bills continue to rise this winter.
In October, a £149 rise in the energy price cap left many people vulnerable heading into the winter months. This was made worse by the government’s decision to cut the Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners earning as little as £12,000 per year.
Danny Chambers and all Lib Dem MPs voted against this heartless cut.
Meanwhile, Winchester’s Conservatives and the local Green Party leader failed to back a motion in Winchester City Council calling for a return of the payments for the less well-off.
The Liberal Democrats are taking action locally by supporting Citizens Advice for budgeting and benefit assistance, promoting pension credit uptake, helping households reduce bills with retrofitting funds and extending council tax support.
Lib Dem City Council leader, Martin Tod says, “The disastrous legacy of the last Conservative government has left many residents needing support. Labour removing the Winter Fuel Payments from the poorest Winchester residents means that many older residents are worried they won’t be able to cope this winter.”
