Save The South Downs From Oil Drilling
The beautiful South Downs National Park is under threat from oil drilling and pumping.
This is unbelievable. In 2021 the Conservative government gave permission for exploratory oil extraction on the Matterley Estate, close to Cheesefoot Head.
The South Downs National Park authority refused permission for this but the Government overturned their decision.
But things could get even worse. If we do not take action then in 2025 the oil pumping could be made permanent.
Our local Conservative MPs, Steve Brine and Flick Drummond, should be protecting our National Parks from oil drilling. Instead, both MPs even voted against a ban on fracking, risking even greater destruction of our countryside through the extraction of oil. I can’t wait for our Conservative MPs to develop an environmental conscience.
The last 8 years have been the hottest on record, and July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded since records began. This is largely caused by greenhouse gas emissions, in particular carbon dioxide and methane, both of which will be pumped out as a result of this oil pumping.
We cannot afford to wait for our Conservative MPs to develop an environmental conscience - we must take action now. I’ll fight against any pumping or drilling in our National Park - an area of outstanding natural beauty that should be conserved and protected from commercial exploration.
Protect Our South Downs National Park From Oil Drilling
We call on the Conservative government to stop oil drilling in our South Downs National Park. This Conservative government must commit to protecting our areas of outstanding natural beauty, and to recognise the seriousness of tackling the climate emergency, so we have a healthy planet for generations to come.
